Understanding Synovitis

Synovial joints, essential for our body mobility can become the focal point of discomfort when afflicted by conditions like synovitis. Synovitis refers to the inflammation of the synovial membrane, the lining that surrounds the joint. This inflammation can lead to pain, swelling and limited joint movement.

Causes of Synovitis: Synovitis can result from various factors, with the most common cause being underlying joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Infections, either bacterial or viral, can also trigger synovitis. Additionally, overuse or trauma to a joint can cause acute synovitis, often seen in athletes or individuals with repetitive motion injuries.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Synovitis?

If you’re concerned you may have synovitis, there are several signs and symptoms you should
watch for:-

● Swollen joints
● Spongy joints
● Redness
● Joint bleeds more than three times per month.
● Warm joints
● Chronic joint pain
● Degenerative joint changes

In addition, the affected joint may feel stiff and lose some of its range of motion. Pain associated with synovitis is often described as aching or throbbing and can vary in intensity, ranging from mild discomfort to severe agony. The symptoms may be localized to a single joint or affect multiple joints simultaneously, depending on the underlying cause.

Diagnosing Synovitis: Diagnosing synovitis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination and diagnostic tests. A healthcare provider will inquire about the patient’s symptoms, their onset and any potential triggers. During the physical examination, the physician will assess the affected joint appearance, mobility and tenderness. To confirm the diagnosis and determine the underlying cause, various tests may be employed. Blood tests, including inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, can help identify systemic inflammation. Imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI may be used to assess joint damage and inflammation.
