What is arthritis?

The term “arthritis” refers to joint pain or disease, and there are more than 100 different varieties of arthritis and disorders that are associated with it. Arthritis affects people of all ages, races, and sexes, and it is the main cause of disability in the United States. Although it’s not an age-related disease, some varieties of arthritis affect older people more frequently than younger people. Women are more likely to have it than males.

What are the different types of arthritis?

Osteoarthritis: The most prevalent form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also referred to as “wear and tear” or degenerative arthritis. It causes the smooth, cushiony cartilage—which covers the ends of your bones—to deteriorate and wear away.

Without any protection, the ends of the bones then rub against one another, eventually resulting in pain, stiffness, and loss of movement. The joints in your wrist, the base of your thumb, and the middle and top (near fingernails) of your fingers are the ones that experience osteoarthritis the most frequently. 

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that arises when your immune system erroneously targets your own body’s tissues. RA is a chronic auto-inflammatory condition that affects more than just the joints. The illness can harm a range of body systems in some people, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

Unlike osteoarthritis, which causes wear and tear on your joints, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing severe swelling that can eventually lead to bone erosion and joint deformity. The inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis can also harm other sections of the body.

Most patients get psoriasis years before they are given a psoriatic arthritis diagnosis. Yet, for some people, joint issues start either concurrently with or before skin patches develop.

Both psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) destroy your joints, resulting in bruising, stiffness, and discomfort. Both conditions are autoimmune, which means your immune system mistakenly destroys healthy body components. They can harm blood vessels, the skin, and other organs as well.

Nonetheless, there are significant distinctions between RA and psoriatic arthritis. The likelihood is that you will only have one condition, not both. The same medications frequently treat both psoriatic arthritis and RA.

Psoriatic Arthritis vs Rheumatoid Arthritis

When you have psoriatic arthritis, your immune system attacks and damages not only your joints but also your skin. It causes your body to produce an excessive number of skin cells, which leads to psoriasis, a skin condition that frequently affects people with psoriatic arthritis.

What are the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis and psoriatic arthritis?

RA is hereditary. If you have a close relative who has the disease, your chances of contracting it are increased. Women are more likely to develop RA than men. Symptoms typically appear between the ages of 40 and 60.

Psoriatic arthritis is also inherited. The condition may be linked to specific genes. In comparison to RA, psoriatic arthritis typically begins between the ages of 30 and 50.

Researchers aren’t sure what causes either type of arthritis. They believe it is caused by a combination of genes and other factors, such as hormones and bacterial or viral infections, which can send the immune system into overdrive.

Joint swelling, stiffness, and pain are all symptoms of RA and psoriatic arthritis. Both conditions affect the joints in the fingers and toes but in slightly different ways. Each one can also cause other symptoms.
